Self-Consistency

Sampling several reasoning paths and taking the majority answer.

technique Prompting 2 relationships

Overview

Self-consistency samples multiple chain-of-thought completions for the same question and returns the answer most of them agree on. It solves the problem that a single reasoning trace can go wrong confidently, and that the errors differ between samples. It exists because agreement across independent attempts is a cheap and effective confidence signal, at the cost of multiplying inference.
