Grounding
Tying a model's output to supplied sources rather than its memory.
Overview
Grounding means supplying the material an answer must be based on and requiring the answer to follow from it, usually with citations. It solves the problem that a model's parametric memory is fluent, unverifiable and sometimes simply wrong. It exists as the engineering response to hallucination: the claim can be checked because the source is named.
