Packages an application and its dependencies into a portable image.
Overview
Docker builds an image containing an application and everything it needs to run, so the same artefact runs on a laptop and a server. It solves the environment problem that a program works on one machine and fails on another because of library versions or system configuration. It exists because it made deployment reproducibility a property of the artefact rather than a set of instructions someone has to follow correctly, and it is the unit most deployment tooling operates on.
