Aperçu
Kubernetes schedules containers across a pool of machines, restarts what fails and scales what is loaded. It solves the problem that a container runtime alone gives you no answer for which machine should run what, or what happens when one dies. It exists because that answer has to be automated once you run more than a handful of services, and the cost is substantial operational complexity that is only worth paying at a certain scale.
